Anatomy of the Pause: 3 Keys to Effective Reset

The People’s Pause is a breath awareness platform for mindfulness skills training.  The program centers around creating a “felt sense” memory for a particular state in the mind and body.  The Pause habit provides “on the go” micro-learning at a DIY pace.

An effective Pause impacts both body chemistry and brain function, harmonizing your internal operating system.   The somatic experience of the Pause leverages the dynamic interconnection of heart, mind and body with 3 distinct components.

Anatomy of The Pause

Physically Relaxed: Diaphragmatic Breath

Diaphragmatic breathing triggers a physical downshift in the body’s stress response.  A full body inhale and relaxed, extended exhale serves to engage the parasympathetic nervous system, associated with the body’s natural rest and restore mode.  This, in turn, shifts body chemistry to support greater calm and wellbeing.

Mentally Focused: Somatic Experiencing

Attention to the somatic experience of the breath disengages the brain’s default mode network, shutting off mental looping for a momentary brain break.  Pausing for a few relaxed breaths provides a window of awareness into the present moment and a chance to choose a more mindful experience.

Emotionally Positive:  Intentional Appreciation

Pausing provides the opportunity to choose your mindset.  Intentional appreciation taps the energetic power of heart coherence and helps to offset survival based negativity bias.   Positive emotion harmonizes the neural system surrounding the heart into a state of energetic coherence with mind and body.  Heart coherence is tied to vegal tone, which in turn is tied to emotional resiliency and wellbeing.
